Place Cards

Place cards, with the name of a guest, are positioned at each individual place setting to help guests find their exact seat.
Like the menu, the place card can be classically simple or decorative to reflect the rest of your wedding stationery.

Place Cards

Having been directed to the correct table by either a table plan or an escort card, your guests will be assisted in finding the specific seat they have been allocated by the place card positioned at their individual place setting. Place cards, sometimes referred to as placement cards, are traditionally a folded piece of card on which the name of your guest is either written or printed.

In a sense, place cards also perform a double function for as well as indicating where each guest should sit, a place card will also provide the means for a guest to identify a fellow guest. To this end, it can be extremely helpful if your place cards are double sided, as by repeating the name on that side of the card which faces fellow guests seated across the table, a welcome introduction or reminder is provided to them, which can be particularly helpful in a noisy venue.

What formats are available to me?

A place card is usually wider than it is tall to provide adequate space for the name or names to be written clearly, although a square format card can be used if preferred, and would almost certainly be so where other pieces of wedding stationery have also been square. It will, more often than not, take the form of a folded card and that fold will usually be on the long edge so that it forms a ridge like a tent, which is why we call this type of fold ‘tent fold’.  Equally, place cards can also be folded on the short edge so that they stand like a book, in which case we call this type of fold ‘side fold’. All our cards are tent folded unless otherwise specified.

One reason for using a folded card is that it is self-supporting and can stand on its own, but should you prefer to use a single card this can be displayed in several ways. It can be laid flat on the place setting, placed in the prongs of the desert fork or used in conjunction with a dedicated, decorative holder. Although such holders can be purchased, you might prefer to be more creative and find an alternative ‘holder’ that ties in with your wedding theme.

Should a place card always be hand written?

Whilst traditionally a place card would have been written by hand it is very common these days for them to be printed. Using digital technology which is well suited to the printing of names that change for every card, it is possible these days to print what would not have been economically viable until quite recently. Should you prefer your place cards to be written by hand, then we can arrange for the services of a professional calligrapher to undertake this for you or provide you with blank or partially printed cards so that you can write in the names yourself.

How long do you need to produce printed cards for me?

If we have already produced other items of your wedding stationery for you then we will probably already have some idea of the colours and fonts that should be used, but if not, then simply choose the design that appeals and provide us with your list, including titles where appropriate, from which we will then create a proof. Following your approval of the proof, production will only take a handful of days but please allow sufficient time for proofing, production and shipping to ensure you receive your place cards with time to spare before your wedding. As with escort cards, we recommend that when you provide us with your list of names that you include the names not only of those guests who have confirmed their attendance but also any that have yet to reply, as this will ensure that you have a card ready for all those who might possibly attend. Not only does this reduce delays in the preparation and printing of these cards which can go to print all the sooner, it helps to reduce unnecessary stress in the days leading up to your wedding.

Can you send them to me when they are ready?

We would be delighted to welcome you to our Chelsea premises if you choose to collect your cards but are very happy to despatch them directly to you using either a same-day courier for clients residing in Central London, an overnight carrier for clients on the UK mainland or an International carrier for those clients living overseas. International couriers usually take between 1-3 days but can take longer to deliver to more remote destinations.
