What to consider when choosing an outfit as mother of the bride

Published

Today’s weddings are often based around a theme, using one colour palette to tie everything together; from the wedding invitations, flowers, bridesmaid dresses and table settings, even down to the food. For the mother of the bride this can be very helpful as it provides guidance and direction, which can make the decision about what to wear a great deal easier. The mother of the bride is an integral part of the bridal party and traditionally her choice of colour takes precedence over the Mother of the Groom (who should never dress to outdo the bride’s mother).

As a mother of the bride, we would suggest having a clear idea about the particular theme and colours chosen for your daughter’s wedding – before you go shopping! Once you start your search, finding exactly the right outfit, in the colour of choice, can seem daunting. Especially if the fashion world has deemed your chosen hue as not on trend that season.

At Lalage Beaumont colour is one of the most important elements of every season’s collection. From soft to vibrant, different tones and shades are used in many interesting and varied fabrics to offer a comprehensive collection to suit different complexions and themes. In Spring and Summer, soft pastels and icy shades sit alongside lively colours like bright turquoise and shocking pink. By contrast, in Winter, jewel tones of sapphire, carnelian and tourmaline vie with greys and deep royal blues, which themselves are popular across all the seasons. From sky to marine blue – the choice is extensive. And if the colour you have set your heart on is not on our racks, we can create a bespoke piece in the exact hue, especially tailored to you.

As for styles, we really don’t do ‘fussy’. Simple dress-coats with delicate detailing, or stylish dresses and smart jackets can be effortlessly co-ordinated to create a sophisticated, contemporary and elegant look. Don’t feel you must take an outfit exactly as it comes, or as you have seen in a photograph, you should feel confident in experimenting with different styles, to achieve your own look.

It is also important to choose an outfit that can be worn again and again, not just for the wedding. For instance, dress coats work beautifully paired with narrow black trousers for an on-trend cocktail look, or try dressing down your mother of the bride dress by wearing it under a piece of good knitwear.

Once you’ve made your decision about the outfit, the hat is the next item to choose. Think about whether you want this item to make a statement, or whether it should be a subtle addition to the overall look. At Lalage Beaumont there is a wonderful selection of shapes and colours available – and should you be unable to find exactly what you need, we also make hats to order.

Jewellery and bags too are all on hand, as is advice about shoes. Most importantly, we are very happy to welcome the whole family, if they choose to come with you to our showroom, to enhance your shopping experience.
